Portfolio basics
How to create the best portfolio online: a guide for students in Southeast Asia
For students at UP, Ateneo, UI, ITB, BINUS, HUST, Chulalongkorn, Universiti Malaya and others: a portfolio for local jobs, outsourcing and remote work.

If you study at the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle, the University of Santo Tomas, Universitas Indonesia, ITB, Universitas Gadjah Mada, BINUS, Vietnam National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, FPT University, Chulalongkorn University, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia or another university in Southeast Asia, you study in a region where outsourcing, shared services, technology and remote work are major sources of jobs. A portfolio works well in that environment.
Many of your readers will be abroad
Employers in the region range from local companies to multinational shared-service centres and overseas clients. Many of the people who read your application won't be in your country and won't know your university. Write your portfolio for them:
- Use clear English.
- Explain your degree and grading in one line.
- Show your work rather than relying on the school name.
See portfolios for international job applications.
Languages: use them honestly
Southeast Asian students often speak several languages. List them with honest levels, and keep an English version of your site complete. If you target local employers, you can add a section in your own language, for example Filipino, Bahasa, Vietnamese, Thai or Malay, as long as nothing important appears only there.
Be specific about English. "English: professional working proficiency" is clearer than "fluent". If you have a test score, add it with the test name. See adding a video introduction if you want to let employers hear how you communicate.
Show communication and reliability
Many roles in the region, in customer support, operations, technology services and remote work, depend on communication and reliability. A portfolio can show these:
- Write clearly. Short, correct sentences matter.
- Add testimonials from supervisors, clients or team leads, with permission. See portfolio testimonials and references.
- State your time zone and your availability.
- Show finished work, not just plans.
See showing soft skills on your portfolio.
Choose three to five projects
Pick the work closest to the role you want. For software and data roles, show live demos and code. For design, writing and marketing roles, show a few strong pieces with the process behind them. For business roles, show case studies, campaigns and internship work. Include final year projects and competition entries.
For each project, say the problem, your role, what you did and the result. See how to write a case study and building a portfolio with no work experience.
Freelancing and remote work
If you want clients abroad, add a short "work with me" section: what you do, how you work, how to contact you and your time zone. Keep the details honest. Don't promise more than you can deliver. See the freelancer portfolio guide and the virtual assistant portfolio guide.
Protect your personal information
Share your email address and LinkedIn link. Leave out your home address, ID numbers and other sensitive details. Be careful with unexpected offers that ask for money or documents. See personal information on your portfolio.
Publish and share it
Folitox AI reads your CV and drafts a portfolio website with your bio, projects, skills and education. You choose a template, correct anything that's wrong, add your images and links, and publish at your own address. It is free to start. Add the link to:
- The top of your CV
- Your LinkedIn profile, plus any freelancing profiles
- Local and international job-site profiles
- Your GitHub profile README, if you write code
- Your email signature
