How to create the best portfolio online: a guide for students in the UAE and the Gulf

For students at Khalifa, UAEU, AUS, King Saud, KFUPM, Qatar University and other Gulf universities: a portfolio built for the regional job market.

If you study at Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, the American University of Sharjah, the University of Sharjah, King Saud University, KFUPM, KAUST, Qatar University, Sultan Qaboos University, Kuwait University or another university in the Gulf, you study in one of the most international job markets in the world. Many employers hire people from dozens of countries, and many students are themselves international.

A portfolio helps in that setting, because employers there often compare candidates from different education systems. This guide covers what is specific to the region.

An international audience

Hiring teams in the Gulf are often multinational. The person reading your application may not know your university, your home country's grading system or the name of your degree. Make your portfolio clear to someone with no context:

  • Write in clear English. Add Arabic if you target employers who work in Arabic.
  • Explain your degree and grading in one line.
  • Show your work, so employers can judge it themselves.

If you are applying for roles in several countries, see portfolios for international job applications.

Local CV expectations vary

CV conventions in the region differ from those in the UK or the US. Many employers in the Gulf are used to seeing a professional photo, nationality and sometimes visa status on a CV. Practices differ between employers and industries, so check what is normal for the sector you target. On a public portfolio, take more care than on a private CV:

  • A professional photo is a choice, not a requirement. If you use one, keep it simple. See choosing a profile photo.
  • Leave out your passport number, ID number, home address and date of birth.
  • If you mention visa or work-authorisation status, keep it factual, and check the rules for your situation with your university or the relevant authority.

See personal information on your portfolio.

Languages

Languages are an advantage in the Gulf. List each one with an honest level. The CEFR scale (A1 to C2) is widely understood, or use plain words such as "native", "professional" and "conversational". If you speak Arabic and English, say so clearly.

Projects that matter to regional employers

The Gulf has strong activity in engineering, energy, construction, logistics, finance, aviation, hospitality, healthcare, technology and government-linked projects. Match your portfolio to the field you want:

  • Engineering and construction: designs, analyses, site visits, drawings and reports.
  • Business and finance: case studies, internships, competitions and society leadership.
  • Technology: apps, data projects and live demos.
  • Design and media: a few strong pieces with the process behind them.

Choose three to five projects where you did a real share of the work. Write each one with the problem, your role, what you did and the result. See how to write a case study.

Internships are valuable. Describe what you did, not just where.

If you are an international student

Many students in the Gulf come from other countries. Some plan to stay and some plan to go home or move on. Say what you are targeting. For example, "Final-year civil engineering student seeking graduate roles in the UAE or Saudi Arabia." Rules for working after graduation depend on your nationality and permit, so check them before you apply. See the guide to portfolios for international applicants.

Publish and share it

Folitox AI reads your CV and drafts a portfolio website with your bio, projects, skills and education. You choose a template, correct anything that's wrong, add your images and links, and publish at your own address. It is free to start. Then add the link to:

  • The top of your CV
  • Your LinkedIn profile, which many Gulf employers and recruiters use heavily
  • Applications and job-site profiles
  • Your email signature and messages to recruiters

Your university's career office and alumni network can often help with introductions. See where to share your portfolio and your portfolio and LinkedIn profile.

Quick checklist

  • Clear English, with Arabic if it helps
  • Degree and grading explained in a line
  • Languages listed with honest levels
  • Three to five projects with problem, role and result
  • No ID or passport numbers, home address or date of birth
  • Target field and location stated
  • Link on your CV, LinkedIn and applications

Putting it together

The Gulf job market is diverse and international. A portfolio that explains your degree clearly, shows your languages and presents real projects helps employers who've never heard of your university. Be careful with personal details and share the link wherever you share your CV.
